I am re-powering my montuak with a 1979 merc inline 6. The motor which is new to the boat has power trim. The old motor does not have power trim. Where is the proper placement of the hydualic unit on a 17' montuak? Can I place it under the center console and lengthen the hydraulic lines or should I mount it on the transom? Thanks

Nicole the Trim unit for the motor should be housed in the motor mounting bracket. There should be to external reservoirs with external hoses.
We had the same motor (1984) on our 84 Montauk. We had to get the tilt trim unit on it replaced and it is a pain to do. To replace the unit the motor has to removed from the hull and replaced as whole because it is a sealed unit. The cheapest quote was $1400.

I think he has the external power trim unit. Merc's didn't come with internal power trim until the 80's. I would think you could put the trim unit any where you want so long as the hoses are long enough. The only thing you will add is a little fmore fluid. I have mine mounted on the forward side of the curved splash well.
