Has any one heard of using this motor on a montuak 17? I bought the motor for parts. It is is nicer than the merc 900 90 hp I have on the boat. The motor seems to be the identical size and weight as my 90hp. I realize the boat is only rated for 100 hp but it seems to tempting to switch motors instead of robbing the parts from the motor which is not as nice. As I said the motors seems to be the same size as the 90hp but it just creates more hp via carburation and intakes. The motors are identical years. I originally wanted the motor for the outdrive, power trim and stainless prop but am just wondering because the 1400 is in nearly new condition.

I really don't see any problems if the engine weighs the same and you are the only operator.
Keep in mind though, if someone else is going to operate the boat, especially any kids, of what might happen.
You would be turning this Montauk into a high speed race boat...
I would also check with your insurance company to see if they would still be willing to insure you and if there would be any additional cost.....

You could always put the 90 cowling on the 140 - :D Just be careful with all that power.

Depending on what year 140 inline it is, it's really only 115-125hp at the prop anyway. That 17 hull has been rated to 115 hp certain years if i recall correctly, so technically that hull was rated for that much hp. Make sure to throw a new impellar on that every year. Thats a long way to pump water to those top cylinders and those are the ones that tend to get hot and cook. I also say use the 90 cowling wrap and covers on it for a instant sleeper :D Throw some pics up, would love to see more pics of Inline Mercurys on Whalers
