The doors on the 20' Outrage I just bought are messed up.
Do you think I can fix them or have them fixed?

Depends on how good at wood working you are? You can keep your eyes open, doors do show up on Ebay from time to time.

If I had all of the pieces, I'm pretty good with glue. :o
But that's all the pieces I have.
Maybe I can find someone who secializes in fixing up something like that.
I will start checking Ebay too.

West Marine has kits to make your own louvered teak doors. I am looking at getting enough of the side rails,slats and top-bottom pieces to make 2 14" x 22" doors for my chris craft console I bought for my 21 Rev/Rage. I'll have about $140 or so in each door.

Unfortunately for you, the hardest part to make on that door is the piece for the louvers which is the part of your doors that are broken.

I would take them to someone who specializes in making louvered doors as this takes a special tool to make those slots in the frame...

Well, at least all the other wood is in pretty good shape.
I just brought it home tonight. It has Black doors on it now, but I will put them back to wood soon.

I would start with the kits bob is talking about. I was just looking at them last week. If you want I have a full set of photos with dimensions of all the teak parts on the console.

I looked at some teak louvered door parts online, but I don't think they were the same size as mine.
Maybe I'll have to create CNC programs to mill out some replacement pieces. B)

Short answer: You will be dollars ahead just to buy new (used) doors from another Whaler owner or Ebay.

I have made louvered teak doors before and there is considerable set-up in making the jigs and it is a bunch of tedious routing. Yes, it can be done but I'd just buy whole Whaler doors and refinish them.

Tom- Have you seen the kits I'm talking about in the west marine catalog? Everything is pre routed. All you have to do is make simple cuts for proper size and assemble.

However I would recommend defender over theft (west) marine any day. I have always gotten great prices and service from them.

Yes I have. The problem is they are close but not quite the same. The woodwork used on Whalers was always unique and generally above average in quality.

In the case of the louvered doors, the lovers may not be the same size nor set at the same angle. Also understand that the Whaler doors are laid out so the louvers begin and end vis-a-vis the top and bottom rails in such a way as to overlap just right and keep water out. A generic louvered stile will not necessarily have the appropriate layout.

Furthermore, the width of the stiles and rails are different on the Whaler doors. They also have a rather familiar beaded round-over above the rabbet but this does not exactly match the AFI kits.

In theory it would be slick if it all matched up, but the chances of this are very slim.

Tom-I agree on the fact that the Whaler doors are probably nicer and of a higher quality. I was just putting this out as an option for someone on a budget or someone who might like to have any door over none etc. Glad to hear no one has said the "s" word yet (starboard) :D

The nice thing about "Whaler's" is that they were made to be repaired fairly easily (that's why mine is still in the drive way...:(..., I'm waiting for the seat to come back from the Upholsterer), especially when it comes to the wood, probably the ONLY part that you can't fabricate in the basement is the "LOUVER'S", you could probly find, and repair the door with a modified plastic one ( I can hear the guns cocking now) but, the wooden door from B/W would look much better, I was looking at the new whaler cat. I did'nt see much wood on them :(, those few pieces of "Mahogony" that I have on my 15' sport REALLY sets the boat apart from others, gives it that "CLASSY" (caaan't get thair, through heeeya) "New England" look, nothing compares to it. good luck
