I have a 2001 21 outrage and would like to get a 9.9hp kicker, Can anyone tell me if I need a long shaft on the kicker or will short work as well?
Thanks.

Being that you are in Michigan I bet you at wanting to troll for Salmon?
If you are mounting it directly to the transom you will need a long shaft. If you are mounting it on a kicker bracket that can move up and in, as well as down and back you might be able use a short shaft but, it will likely not work very well above 2-2.5mph. In rough, tight rollers the prop can pop out of the water too. I know some guys in Manistee and Frankfort troll larger boats with that type of set up and to me, it never seemed worth the hassle. If you are buying a motor just get the long shaft to start with.

Thanks for the reply. Was leaning towards the long shaft just wanted to make sure. By the way I will be trolling on Lake Erie and Detroit River for Walleye.
Thanks.

Go with the long shaft. I have a long shaft 9.9 on a bracket on my Montauk. I previously had a short short shaft on a bracket on a different hull and it was a real pain in a**...........
