I'm the newest owner of a 1973 Montauk. I found this website while surfing the net for Whaler parts and found the answers to most of my questions about my Whaler. Can I move the fuel tank under the center console? Are there any fuel tanks designed for this application? Where can I purchase?

rschue,
NO..... Absolutely Not....
The 1973 console does not have any ventilation.

Even the later consoles with louvered teak doors don't have enough ventilation. All the fumes would end up just under the top of the console... Any spark from the electrical system under the console and you would end up viewing your boat from a much higher elevation when the console exploded...
In a Classic Montauk, the battery and oiler (if you have an oiler) belong in the center console.
The fuel tank(s) belong under the RPS....
Deck space on a Montauk is at a premium so that is why I believe the battery and oiler belong in the console for this model.

rschue,
Though you can not mount it in the console I have seen I guy in Frankfort, Mi. that has had a custom tank built to fit in front of the console where the cooler normally is. The tank acts a seat and the cushion is removed to fill the tank. He stated he LOVED the set up as the extra weight up front improved the rough seas ride quality of the boat. Every time I have seen the boat I am without a camera though.
