I saw a posting on motor mounting height and it got me to thinking. I have a 1980 Striper 17 with an Evinrude 90 motor. The motor is currently in the "all the way down" first bolt hole position. Would it improve the performance and fuel consumption to "raise" the motor to the "one hole up" or "two holes up" position? How is the optimum placement calculated?

Yes.
The anti-cavitation plate (wide fin above the prop) should be at the level, or just below, the surface of the water when on a plane.
For a Boston Whaler hull, this translates to 2 or possibly 3 holes up. What prop you have will affect this height adjustment. Some props need to be deep in the water to perform while others like to be up closer to the surface.
What brand and model/size prop do you have? The number is stamped on the inside of the prop. You will need to pull the prop to see it.
