I have a 1976 Whaler Sport 15'-3. I am at the juncture where I need to consider replacement of my 1976 Johnson 75HP (w/ no tilt) with a newer engine. I am also considering adding a tilt or a jack plate so I know I would have to factor that weight into the total. I believe my current engine weighs right at 200 lbs. Does anybody have a value for the maximum weight combination of motor / tilt (or jack plate) I can install on my boat.

We have a list of Current Engine Choices and Weight in our article section on the left sidebar.

The 15' has a max rated hp of 70....

Note: a 1976 may have a max hp rating of 75 but you would need to look at the Capacity Plate on your boat.
Here is an example of most 15' models. http://www.whalercentral.com/photogal...oto_id=302

The neoclassic OMC 70 triple is around 255 and the modern Yamaha F70LA weighs in at 260 pounds, both in 20" shaft and including trim and tilt. I think that's about the maximum I'd want on there.
