Thread subject: Whaler Central - Boston Whaler Boat Information and Photos :: dual binnacle control for 1988 montauk

It looks like things are moving right along with my 1976 Johnson 6 kicker motor installation added to the original 1988 Johnson 90 VRO. This was accomplished thanks to Joe's excellent post on the procedure of adding a kicker motor and all the input from all the other member's posts as well. I have luckily located an OMC Johnson Evinrude Dual Top Mount Binnacle Control w/ Trim (95 & older) so now the plan is to link it all together. West Marine is getting me the panther s.s. steering link so now my mission is cable lengths & figuring out how to "STOP" the kicker (shut it down) since it doesn't have a kill button & the factory method of stopping the engine is to twist the throttle to the stop position. My plan was to remove the control arm & operate everything from the console but I believe I will want the kicker to return to idle when the throttle control is returned to the nuetral position so I am turning to you whaler guru's out there for some advice on cable type & lengths for the kicker as well as an idea for turning the kicker off. I know it's outdated but that little Johnson 6 has sentimental value since it was my first boat motor given to me by my dad who's gone now so it's kind of a tribute to him. I am not positive on this, but when you twist the throttle to the off position, doesn't it just ground the ignition?
If so, you could use those wires for a kill switch... and mount it to the dash.

x2 on what what Joe said. Find the wires and run them up to the dash.

Thanks for the info, I will investigate that it sounds like a viable option. I'm wondering which console you were referring to mount the kill button on Joe? The engine console would be closest if there was room for it- sounds kind of risky, or running the wires to the center console would be most ideal- but also I'm not sure if that's an option though to run the wires out of the engine into the wire loom between the center console & the engines. Please share your idea because that would be awesome! Also still looking for cable lengths & type so I can bring the complete package to my local boat shop/ mechanic for install without having to pay dealer prices for the parts. I did well finding the dual binnacle online & would like to keep the trend going since I am a working man like most of us. Thanks, Darren

I was referring to the console on the boat...
However, what about just turning the throttle to shut it off?
That's basically what I do except mine has a button on the end of the throttle are...
I go back to my kicker and start it... You would probably have to turn the throttle lever so it is not in the stop position...
Then go to the helm and operate the boat.
When finished, go back to the kicker, twist the throttle to shut it down, and then raise the kicker motor...
I always need to go to the stern to raise the kicker motor anyway, so it is easy to shut it down at that time also....

Appreciate the response Joe. I think my confusion may be in connecting the binnacle cable to the kicker. Obviously I'm going to want the kicker to idle when the control is returned to the nuetral position. I wasn't sure if after attaching the binnacle's control cable to the throttle control that the arm would still be functional to stop the motor, etc. I'm beginning to think I may be overthinking this thing but I just want to be prepared. The OMC Dual Binnacle will be delivered next week so after seeing the download here on the sight for it I am jazzed. I've seen your posts as well as you kindly sending me links to the conversions you've made in the past to the dual binnacle & kicker install. However, I'm not sure how to obtain the proper cables for the project & have profusely searched the sight for info to no avail. I have a feeling all the info I need is here on the site but shamefully for me I'm not finding it. Any suggestions on shift & throttle cable type & lengths for the dual binnacle on a 1988 Montauk with a 1970's Johnson 6 kicker would be way appreciated. Thanks again, Darren
