Just bought an older Montauk that has a 1987 90HP Evinrude. Unfortunately the outboard turns out to be needing major overhaul. My mechanic recommended I purchase a newer outboard. I live in Sagamore Beach, near Cape Cod. I've checked out a few local marine shops and found one Evinrude 90HP Two stoke with a warranty. I prefer to further explore my options. Craigslist had a few that I'm waiting to hear from.

I thought I'd ask for advice or possibly someone has an Evinrude they would like to sell me.

You mentioned wantin to explore your options. Why not look at other brands? You might find one that suits your needs even better. Or maybe a used one for a steal.

I've spent the last 6 months looking to repower my 82 Montauk. My conclusion... the E-tec 90 is the engine to use. My experience... there are few if any used 90 E-tecs available.

Not sure what you've found, but if you're not interested in it I'd love to take a look.

Do a search on the Hudson Valley CL. A while back, about a month or less there was a real steal, not sure if it sold or not. 17 foot aluminum boat with brand new Yamaha 90 4 stroke advertised for $4,000. Lady claimed her deceased husband had just bought the new motor for over $7,000. The boat was located in Olive Bridge up by Kingston.

CRAZY BUT TRY THIS ....

I also wanted to upgrade my Montauk from a 70 to a 90. I am on a VERY tight budget so here is what I did. If you have a smart phone there is an app that you can search craigslist for certain items within a certain price range. Eventually you will find someone posting a motor at a great price. I ended up with a running 2003 Evinrude 90 Ocean Pro for $250. Not everyone knows boat motors and if you have the time someone will post a GREAT deal.

Other option is look for a boat with a good running motor. Remove the motor and sell the boat.

GOOD LUCK

Sagamore -

Welcome to WhalerCentral.

Many, many Classic Montauk members have been where you are.

I suggest you look though the site map, review the articles sections (see left sidebar)

Prior to asking a question, do a search (under the masthead). The feature has a "match words" option that allows you to really focus your query. Often you will find the answer and can read lengthy conversations.
