I am looking to replace the propeller on my 75 hp Johnson engine. The engine number is J75TLCNB and it has a 13-3/4 x 15 propeller on it now and I am looking to replace it with a 13 x 19 prop. They are asking if the engine has a large gearcase or a small gearcase.
How can I tell? Thanks for your help in advance Ken

Who is "they". If "they" do not know the gearcase size of a 1982 Johnson 75, then you may not want to do business with them.
Your gearcase is neither small nor large. All Johnson and Evinrude outboard motors in this HP class use the intermediate size (4-1/4") gearcase and have for the last 40 years.
What Whaler is this motor being used on?

It will be used on a 17' 1967 Boston Whaler montauk. I am buying this on Ebay and they said it is for a large gearcase 75HP engine. I read online that small gearcases are usually 12" and lower diameter.and anything learger then 12" is a large gearcase. Is this true? I would like to know before I bid. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Ken

Before you try and buy a 1967 Montauk, beware that there is NO such thing....
The Montauk was not made until 1973.........

If someone is advertising this as a Montauk, then they are misrepresenting the boat...

I bought the boat 2 years ago and it said it was a 67 montauk on the registration. i did look it up and did find out that a montauk was not made that year so I think it is a Nauset. Regardless, that was not my original question. But thanks anyway, I found the answer to my original question and the boat model and size were not needed. Thanks

Gearcase size is measured by the diameter of the "bullet" or hub of the gearcase. Small gearcases use 2-1/2", 3" or 3-1/2" hubbed props.
Intermediate size gearcases use 4-1/4" diameter hubs
Large gearcases use 4-3/4" diameter hubs.
As I already said, the 1982 Johnson 75 uses an intermediate size gearcase. Always did. There is no such thing as a "small gearcase" Johnson 75 nor is any such thing as a "large gearcase" Johnson 75, just as there is no such thing as a 1967 Montauk.
You need a propeller with the intermediate, 4-1/4" size hub.
Generally, Large gearcases are used on V-6 outboards from 135 HP and up. The intermediate size gearcases are used on 40-115 HP outboards though there are motors as small as 90 HP that use the Large (V-6) gearcase, the Evinrude E-TEC 90 with a 25" shaft length is one example.
For a 1982 Johnson 75 on a classic 16'=7" Whaler, a 13" x 19" props is the wrong size; too much pitch. Look for a nice used 17" pitch OMC/BRP prop or a 13-1/4" x 15" Stiletto Advantage or Turbo 1.

I guess I am confused....
Your personal page states you own a 1966 whaler with a question mark on "Eastport"?
Now you say in this post it is a 1967 model and that's why I thought you were purchasing another boat...
Very confusing if you keep changing the year of your boat.
What year is it?
Do you have the stencil number to confirm the year?
Not what your state registration says as many times these are not correct for older boats.

Again, from your second post, I thought your were buying a new boat on eBay that came with a motor or a gear case....
Apparently you are just buying a motor with an unknown gear case to you at the time...
Glad you got it all figured out....

Thanks Tom Clark, I took your advice and bought a New Solas Amita 3 Prop Johnson 1973-up 13.25" x 17" Aluminum Propeller. I bought this on Ebay and the seller had it listed for large gearcase only. When I shared what you told me about there not being a
large gearcase on a 1982 75hp Johnson, he researched it and changed the listing. I just recieved the prop today and it fits great. Thanks again. Ken
