Just started getting the 69 Nauset I purchased last fall ready for the season. In the stern right near where the original aft light holders are was a pile of what looked like putty or improperly mixed Marine Tex. I scraped it off and there was a perfectly round hole there. Is this where the original wires went for the lights? Is there a way to fish new wires there? It looked like something was in there but I did not want to mess with it until one of resident experts chimed in.

On the gunnels I wet sanded the blue with 400 and buffed out and it looks great for an almost 40 year old boat. What can I do to cleanup the non-skid preferably w/o painting?

Thanks

Starbrite non skid cleaner with teflon is by far the best stuff I have used.

The good news is, yes this hole was for the wiring. But, this wiring was placed in the hull before the two halves of the boat were put together and injected with foam. There were three wires running from this hole to the tunnel under the helm. There were also three wires running from the bow light to the tunnel under the helm. Two wires were used for running the lights. The gray wire was a spare. Unfortunately, the injected foam has probably glued itself to the wiring and probably it is not possible to pull any new wire. The original wire is of a very small guage and pulling on it will most likely break it. I did the Sekonnett's anchor light last year, and I only had barely one inch of wire to work with. I crimped it, soldered it, and shrink tubed it, and left myself a good 12" to work with in the future. If you fish around in that hole with a paper clip or tweezers, hopefully you might be able to find those wires, including the spare. But also check under the helm at the tunnel to see if you have the other ends as well. Wish there was an easier solution, but I don't know of any. As far as I know these wires are permanently in the boat. Keep us posted.
