Hi all!
In a dumb moment on a dark night i hooked my 1986 Evinrude 150 up reverse polarity to the battery. I now no longer have any charge output from the alternator... so... what did i kill??

I would first suspect the voltage regulator. Does your tach work? It gets its signal from the regulator.

Probbly the stator as well under the flywheel. There is a regulator as mentioned, but you did not state how long the condition was running that way. Bet you have a flashlight available now.

I was so dum, ah! The situation was like this for maybe a minute, and th tachometer still works. I will check the fuses when I get home, all other functions are normal.

I believe reverse poliarity kills the rectifier.

In the Evinrude Parts Online Catalog, they list it as a Rectifier & Regulator.
0395204 RECTIFIER & REGULATOR

One part and I believe the flywheel needs to be pulled to replace this one piece unit...
I had mine changed on my 1985 Evinrude 150 when I first bought the Outrage 18'....
Your part number may be different than the one above so consult your Evinrude dealer.

Yeah a new rectifier will be close to 200 bucks. I got one for my 1985 90 and it was 175 I believe. Go with a Sierra one from Overton's, it is a lot cheaper than one from a dealer

Thanks for your help. Believe it of not the Sierra part is more expensive! It is really hard to find parts here in NZ but will ring around and see whats available, otherwise I will just have to place an order!

TRY WEST MARINE, THEY ARE EASY TO DEAL WITH, SHIP QUICKLY, AND THEY WILL PRICE MATCH ANY PRICE YOU GET ON THE WEB. I PAID 115.00 FOR THE REGULATOR/RCTIFIER FOR MY 120 EVINRUDE LOOPER LAST SPRING.
