Hello,
Im sure this topic has been beaten to death. I have searched to find the answer but cant seem to find what im looking for.
i have a mid 70s 13 i am looking to repower with a new current engine. The issue im finding is the weight all seem to be a bit heavy. My options for a new engine currently are
e tec 40 or
a Mercury 40 efi
and info and suggestions would be great. i would like to place the order this week and am having a hard time deciding.

Since you said mid 70's I have to assume 20 inch shaft? Even with that the E-TEC 40HP is probably too heavy @ 240#. The 30HP would be a better choice @ 183# for remote with power tilt/trim.

Thanks for all the responses. I should have mentioned I moved the gas tank under the seat. And have a light weight battery mounted close to the seat. I has concidered the 30 but have been more inclined to the 40 to be able to pull a tube or skier. Seem that the e tec is the heaviest of the 40 which I dont really understand.

Because the E-Tec 40 is built on the same block as the 50 and 60 hp models... Same block, same weight...

Well I'll be a contrarian to the Evinrude fans here and tell you I believe the 3 cylinder Mercury 40HP EFI 4-stroke to be a much better engine, quieter and more fuel efficent, and MORE powerful. The 2 cylinder E-tecs have not perfromed well in comparison to the other brands of 4-strokes, and they have a "Bigfoot" gearcase with too much drag and too much prop for a little 13 Whaler.

I recently saw one of these new Merc 40's being installed on a 13 and it was very nice. Weight is 217#. Even if you want 30HP, which I don't recommend, the Mercury 30 EFI 4-stroke is another beautiful engine well worth your consideration. In the lower HP ranges these days, almost all engines being bought are 4-strokes.

We are looking to put a new 40 etc on the whaler within the next week or so. Does anyone have similar year boat with a forty etec on it. I know the boat is rated for a 40hp which was on the boat already but the problem is that all the new 40hp are super heavy compared to the older ones weather we 2 stroke or 4 stroke and the new 40 etec is almost 60 pounds heavier and we were concerned how the boat would sit as well as how it will handle. Any input would be great

With the heavier 4-strokes, I'd say you are better off with the non-notched transom 13' Whaler that requires a 20" motor. That way, with 2 people seated on the back seat, you still have a fair amount of free board at the stern. However, this will not be the case with a notched 13' Whaler from ca. 1970 or before in which water can spill over at the transom through the notch, and which use a 15" engine. For those earlier boats, go with the lighter but used 2 strokes.

Ok so I ended up going with a new mercury 40 efi. Move the tank under the seat. Should have it in a few weeks we'll see how it goes.

Rob, There was a member here that put a 40HP E-Tec on a 13 and ended up swapping it for a 30HP due to the weight.

Well it looks like I am too late but just want to say that I LOVE my 40 EFI Yamaha. the weight is not a problem and it has plenty of power. I regularly pull a skier with 4 people in the boat. Also the fuel economy is great and the engine is wisper quiet. You will be very happy with it.
