Thread subject: Whaler Central - Boston Whaler Boat Information and Photos :: Mounting E-Tec 90 on Montauk

I've settled on an Evinrude E-tec 90 hp to repower my 1982 Montauk. After discussing the mount for the new engine has become the subject of interest to me. I'd welcome any input from fellow Whaler's he may have experience on this topic.
I'm told that the mounting holes on the E-tec will not mate up with the ones on the Montauk. Apparently, the top 2 holes will work, but the lower holes / slots on the E-tec will not. One dealer is saying they'll simply drill 2 new holes and 'lag' the lower holes into the transom. The other says he'll drill and tap 2 holes into the E-tec to allow those bolts to attach in the spot Whaler intended.
This is my first time around the E-tec / Whaler track... I'd welcome any input you care to offer. I'm sold on the E-tec as the right choice... just want to be sure its hooked on properly.
Thanks, Mike

You want them to drill the yellow or green holes in this diagram.

They need to be careful with the yellow holes to make sure it clears the inside of the spashwell....
The engine should be mounted 2 holes up, maybe 3 holes up.... depending on prop...

If they drill the Green holes, the engine would be mounted 2 holes up and you would still be able to go up a hole if necessary but you can't go down which you would probably never need anyway.
Motors were mounted too low back in those days.
Now they know to raise the motor for better performance.

On a 1982 hull, you will need to drill the green holes, not the yellow holes.
The E-TEC 90 should be mounted as high as it can go, three holes up, not just two holes up.

Mike, both of those dealers sound pretty scary. One has come up with a mounting method that isn't structurally sound, and the other has decided on a method that will immediately void your warranty. Hopefully they can be educated by just showing them the diagrams, but it really makes me wonder if they know enough to do the rest of the job right!

OK, I think maybe we all need to get on the same page here......
I thought 1982 was the year of the change of the "Bow Locker" and around the time the depth of the "Splashwell".........????????
See this thread on the Bow Locker change......
http://www.whalercentral.com/forum/vi...;pid=67826
From our reports above, 1982 models had the larger bow locker.
From other reports, approximately 1987 is when the splashwell depth was changed.
See this thread:
http://www.whalercentral.com/forum/vi...;pid=86381
I remember hearing other reports for earlier models that the "Yellow" hole could be drilled with a slight angle and using a washer that was flattened with a little taken off the bottom.
That would depend on the upper holes. Whether they were 1 7/8 inches from the top or 2 inches from the top...
I remember one member drilling his upper holes about 1 1/2 inches from the top and then drilling the yellow holes......
At any rate, drilling the "Green" holes will work and allow adjustment of 1 hole.
Either all the way up (3 holes up) or mounted one hole lower which would essentially be, 2 holes up.....

Sorry for jumping in here.. Is this the same for a 1991 Montauk 17?
thanks

A 1991 Montauk will have the deeper splashwell and can use a full BIA standard bolt pattern.
A 1982 Montauk will have the shallower splashwell. I believe the splashwell depth change occurred by 1988 maybe in 1987 but we have not pinned down the exact date.
With any shallow splashwell 16'-7" hull, there is no reason to drill the yellow holes if the motor is going to be mounted two or three holes up anyway, and as we have come to realize, there is no reason not to mount any brand of motor at least two holes up. The Evinrude E-TECs do best at three holes up.

Thanks Joe and Tom
Great info as always!
Seems like there is alot of interest in repowering boats right now.

Mike -
Not sure who is giving you the rigging advice but most dealers do not know the correct height. Some will even argue with owners who get the correct advice.
You want to make sure they do what YOU tell them.I have read several
members who had dealers rig the motors opposite of their instructions and had to pay twice to get it fixed.
