Thread subject: Whaler Central - Boston Whaler Boat Information and Photos :: 1985 Outrage Repowering?

Is there any reason, absent structural problems, not to repower a 1985 Outrage in good condition with a Yamaha 150 HP 4 cycle engine? My boatyard is concerned about the incremental weight (we now have a 140 HP 1985 Johnson) hurting the selfbailing feature when at the mooring.
Thx in advance.

Some express concern about the weight of that engine on the OR18, if combined with batteries in the original splashwell location, and a kicker engine. Many will suggest moving the batteries to the console when getting near 500lbs of engine weight on the transom.
Of the many photos I've seen of that engine on an OR18, the static trim appears appears to be ok provided the F150 is the only engine on the boat. It would likely sit pretty low at the stern if a kicker was added.
Not everyone like the idea of batteries in the console. You'll find many good arguments to both sides of that question.
These are some of the reasons so many go to an ETEC, Optimax, F115 or Suzuki DF140...to save weight.

It is a fairly heavy motor but other members have the Yamaha 150 r stroke on the back of their 18'...
See this weight chart:

My 1985 Evinrude 150 weighs in a 380 pounds.
I would consider the E-Tec 130 or E-Tec 150 or something similar in weight.

To simulate the weight of the new engine
before you spend the money, calculate the weight difference between the engine and battery and the f150. Get some bags of sand or cat litter or buckets of water (you get the idea) and put them in the splashwell. Note the level of water in relation to the splashwell drains before and after with the boat tied up and empty as well as a few people amidships.

I wouldn't sweat it. Think of the other guys that are running with a rear seat, battteries in the splash well, kicker, bait well, etc. I noticed some difference (maybe 1 inch) when I went from a 115 to a 150, but not enough to be concerned. You might see the same type of incremental change.

The boat will handle the weight...
Remember, this boat was designed for twins...
I had a pair of 1986 Johnson 70 hp weighing 250 pound each, plus 2 batteries and 2 oilers..
That's over 500 pounds on the transom.....

However, I don't think I would add a kicker motor along with the Yamaha 150 due to it getting really heavy back there.
I use a kicker... Wouldn't be without one...

I like the idea of that ETEC 130 Joe.
I was thinking on the weekend about the power rating...in 1981, the max of 150 was considered at the powerhead...then by mid eighties, the prop. 130 would probably work very well, and would pretty much be the lightest option available in 2012.

I like the idea of the E-Tec 130 and a kicker....
Right now my 150 weighs 380 pounds and the kicker is 58 pounds.
Total = 438 pounds
Plus 1 battery and the oiler in the splashwell....
See this article on installing a kicker for those that are considering one.

Something to consider unless you are positive you never want to add a kicker for safety or fishing.

Thx to all for the response...no kicker contemplated, no rear seat, just 2 batteries in the well, so I placed a deposit on the 150 this morning.
