The boat is a 1976 15 sport. The holes in the transom were filled in when the boat was redone. as for the motor its a Mariner 40el What is the best way to drill the holes in the transom to mount a outboard? What drill bit should I use? [Do I] need to place wood on each side to keep from chipping? Thanks Robert

I had to drill additional holes in my transom and all I did was put tape on both sides and started with a small bit, then drilled from each side and worked my way up to the final hole. Just make sure you seal the holes good to keep water out

As mentioned above, masking tape on both sides. Use a good sharp drill bit and use little pressure while drilling. 3M 4200 works well for sealing. Apply a generous amount on both sides and remove excess, when done, with a wet rag.
