Thread subject: Whaler Central - Boston Whaler Boat Information and Photos :: What is the SST equivalent of an Aluminum prop?

115 E-tec pushing a Whaler 190 (Montauk style hull) runs well with an Aluminum prop: 14.5" x 19". It needs replacement for the next season. Upon winterizing, I asked the boat yard to upgrade to an equivalent SST prop.

To my absolute surprise, the boatyard insists that the "equivalent" is a smaller wheel size: 13" x 19".

Does this sound correct, and why so/

Thank you for any expertise on this subject.

Props go by pitch....
You still have a 19 pitch prop....

Engineers figure out the rake and diameter and sell the prop by pitch..
So again, think pitch and this may vary from prop manufacturer to other prop manufacturers....

it is a 1 for 1 swap, which is what you ask for, you will still be running a 19 pitch prop. It is a smaller diameter but the same pitch, the second number is the important one. Not sure if that is the "best" SS prop for your application but it will work. It helps to know exactly which aluminum prop your running, and where it put the RPM's at WOT, speed at WOT and what is your desired usage, speed, hole shot, cruising.

There really is no equivalent alluminum prop to replace a stainless. The charecteristics are very different. Stick to stainless.

Size is not universal across brands for propellers, like tires. . The geometry of the prop is different.

Johnny CW runs a ETEC 115. His prop is a Viper 13-7/8" x 17"

If your E-TEC 115 is currently turrning a 14 1/2 x 19 aluminum propeller then it has a 25 inch leg and a V6 gearcase with a 15 spline propeller shaft. A 13 x 19 SST (if they still made one, which they do not) will not fit on that propeller shaft.

If sticking with the BRP propeller line, your choices are Viper or Rebel. The Viper is probably more appropriate for a 115 and in the 17 to 19 inch pitch range the Viper diameter is 14 3/4 inches.

Tom Clark may be off on holiday right now but I would certainly trust his knowledge and wisdom in the prop department. Once he knows your exact hull and the exact motor you are running he can usually make the right call for the prop unless your boat is loaded oddly or your motor is mounted in the wrong position.

When you say your set up does fine with the current aluminum prop you might be pleasantly surprised in a major difference with the exact right SS prop.

Thank you all for your responses and obvious expertise:

My boat is the BW 19' "Montauk" hull. Actually the hull is the Whaler commercial product equivalent-- called the Guardian, which I put together from scratch, bare hull. I kept the entire project bare bones uncluttered and light in weight as possible. Engine I installed is a 2009 Model # E115DPXSE.

You can see the boat in your Project Albums.

So, I'm looking at this BRP 13x19 SST prop P/N 0763952 in its box, which was assuredly sold to me to replace my bent up old Aluminum 14.5x19. It's just an "SST" model. Not a Viper or a Rebel model.

I don't ski and don't need a hole shot. If I'm paying out to upgrade to stainless, like one of your experts strongly advise, would I be better off with top end speed and/or improved fuel economy with a different prop model?

Thank you, SK.

How messed up was your old prop or do you have RPMs at WOT trimmed out and speed? What SS prop you need depends on current specs with a know prop and what your goals are, i.e. how do you use the boat?

WHALER 27: I HOPE YOU GET THIS MESSAGE... YOU ARE A SAGE! THIS SST I WAS SOLD DOES NOT FIT MY 15 SPLINE PROPELLAR SHAFT AS YOU PREDICTED ABOVE! Since I haven't yet used it, I will be bringing it back to the dealer I bought from, and hopefully replacing it with the VIPER 14.75" x 19" that you recommended.

Many thanks, Sauerkraut!
