It was easy enough to get off with a sawzall but I put the new tilt tube in then went to put the new steering cable through the tilt tube and low and behold it pushed it out the other side. Not all the way but tapping, finagling, trimming up, trimming down, etc., will not push that tube back. What did I miss? Was I supposed to put a retaining nut of some sort on the starboard side of the tube? I know I should know since I took it off but its been about 8 months since I pulled it off and I have no idea. Thanks in advance!

I don't know what motor you have but my 89 60hp Evinrude has.nuts on both sides of the tube.

Dave is correct: the tube should have a nut on each side...

I thought that the threaded nut on the cable would act as a nut on that side, however, like I said, when I went to push the steering arm into the tilt tube, it pushed the tilt tube out of the other side and now I cant seem to cajole it back to the correct position. I guess I need to remove the cable, then get the tilt tube back in the correct position and put a nut on the cable side to keep it from pushing in when installing the cable.
