Hi,

I'm trying to remove the large nut in the middle of the flywheel so I can thread in the puller and remove the flywheel. The ultimate goal is to install a new stator. What's the best way to keep the flywheel from rotating as I do this?

There is a special tool (long handle) that fits into the teeth of the fly wheel that will hold it steady. You can probably rent one from an automotive store. You should have two folks do this, one to hold the flywheel with the tool and the other to get the nut off (from what I remember they are on there at about 80lbs). An impact wrench is recommended, makes it quite easy.

Pull a spark plug, and stuf some soft rope in a plug hole, this will keep the engine from turning without hurting the cylinder wall.

If you have access to an impact wrench, you don't need to hold the flywheel. Because of the way the impact works, you generate virtually no torque. It's similar to the way one can pull a tablecloth out from under dishes. If it's done quick enough, everything stays put. Same thing with an impact wrench. If you don't have one, find a friend that does - makes life way easier. If you were in Maine, I'd help you out in a heartbeat!

Thanks guys. I ended up using a wrench on the engine puller and then pulled the opposite direction with the nut wrench. It took some serious pull, but it all worked out.

Make sure you use the proper puller when removing the flywheel - I made the mistake once and when I reassembled and fired the motor all the magnets let loose. They are sensitive to impact etc.
