Hi,
I just got the 17' Outrage II last week and only has it on water once. My problem is that I've had the towing limitation due to I have a small 4 cylinders truck.
My friend's uncle has 17' Montauk 1997 model which almost 40% lighter in weight and willing to trade my Outrage even and the Montauk has a same condition as mine.
I am a newbie, I am looking for your advice and recommendation for the trade. Please kindly give me your idea/experience/comparasion about those boats in every respect.
Your information is highly appreciated.

BlueNav,
Because you live in San Jose, how far do you have to tow this Outrage II with your truck?
If you aren't towing very far, just make sure the boat trailer has working brakes.
If the trailer has good working brakes, then you should be able to tow the boat locally without any problems even though your might have to do it a little slower than if you had a larger truck.
The Outrage 17' II is a much larger and heavier boat than the Montauk 17' as you are aware..
I have owned both a Montauk 17' and the Outrage 17' II and there is no comparison in ride. The Outrage II will give you a much better ride in the ocean, no doubt about it.
I would choose the boat that is best for your use. If you are going out in the ocean often, I would suggest the Outrage II.

I would agree with Joe, pick the boat that will handle the sea conditions you use it in the best. As for value, a Montauk in excellent condition can bring 9-11k easy. Your Outrage could be worth a good bit more. If I were you I would get a more powerful truck before I would trade off a more capable boat.

Thanks Joe and Jeff for the information.
I am living in central San Jose where it takes me about an hour or so to go to the San Francisco Bay or either Monterey Bay or Santa Cruz, around 60 miles driving.
I don't have a good trailer for my boat and it has no brakes and my little truck is not strong enough to haul the Outrage II with that long distance.
Most of my time for fishing was in the Bay for Halibutt and Striper Bass or near shore Salmon, I am not a deep sea angler. I would prefer to have the boat which is capable for my fishing need.
I've not yet had chance to ride on the Montauk but I have read a lot of positive comments about it in this site. Telling you the truth, even I can have a ride on the Montauk but I think that i will not able tell what the different of the good/the bad between Outrage and Montauk, because the 17 Outrage II is my 1st Whaler, my bad.
Again, appreciate your advice and recommendation and I found out that this site is very helpful for me. What I need to do is read more in this site.
Cheers,
BlueNav

I bought an 17 Outrage II last year, and around here (Great Lakes) they were going for 50 to 100% more than a similar vintage Montauk. It's really quite a bit more boat (and probably engine). It's definately not an even trade.

If the two boats are in similar condition, it is not even close to an "even" trade. I would seriously consider finding a storage facility nearby your ramp at the bay and drive your truck 99 percent of the distance to the bay and then haul the boat the last 1 percent from the storage lot to the ramp.
Since you have/own the boat, stick with it.
Good luck.

Sounds like the perfect excuse to move up to a full sized truck.
While the Montauk is a great boat, IMHO, your Outrage is superior for your intended use.
Best of luck.

Don't do it. The Montauk will beat the crap out of you over the deeper hull of the Outrage. I had a montauk for 11 years and now have a 25' Revenge that rides like a Cadillac compared to the Montauk.

I wouldn't make that trade either, with my 1991 17' Outrage! The Outrage has an interal fuel tank, is wider, longer and heavier...has a larger engine and commands a much higher resale value then the Montauk...throw into the equation that not a lot of Outrages were make of that design make it a desireable commodity! If you're looking for a side step...the boat that comes to mind would be a mid-80's 18' Outrage...that might be closer to an even trade...but you're still better off with the 17'er...it's almost the same size as the 18'er...
I'd either look for a place to store it, find someone who likes to fish (and has a larger truck), or bit the bullet and get a larger truck...I wouldn't trade the Outrage...
Good luck...
