Hi Every One,

I am a brand new kid in this site, please do not push hard on me when I have a silly question.

I just got a used 17 II outrage 1996 this week and plan to install an adjustable kicker motor bracket on it either on the port or startboard side just for in case the main motor has failed.

I looked around the transom, it is molded and I don't really know where I should drill the holes that strong enough to support the bracket and 60 lbs motor. I saw the pics of some of the owner of this kind of model boat has already installed the bracket on the boat and I would like to ask for help and advice on how to do it.

I am highly appreciated your help to show me how to install the bracket step by step instruction and/or drop me a line with attachments of the diagram that I can follow.

I don't know of anyone that likes the adjustable kicker motor bracket.
I had one on my 1997 Outrage 17' II and hated it.

I would have preferred a solid kicker bracket.

Hi Joe,

Thanks a lot for the quick response. I have the one that looks similar to yours which installed on your whaler. Please try to help by showing me how you did put the motor bracket on that boat. I am afraid that I am going to drill the holes incorrectly on the transom.

I did not install the bracket on that prior boat as it came like that when I bought it.

I don't have any measurements and because I don't have the boat anymore, I can't get any.
Maybe someone else here can take some measurements for your from their boat.

The entire transom has wood under it, so you can put your bracket pretty much wherever you want it. I installed an adjustable bracket, because it was the only one that would allow my extra long shaft Johnon 6 hp to reach the water and still be able to steer manually. Here's how I installed mine:

1) tape off the entire area with blue masking tape( the good stuff).

2) Clamp your kicker to the bracket, and lean it up onto the taped off area, using wooden blocks under the skeg to get the height correct.

3) make sure it will clear the main engine when both engines are at full deflection towards each other. Be especially mindful of the propellers.

4) mark the hole locations with a sharpie pen.

5) Using the largest size bolts that your bracket will accomodate (mine had big enough holes for 5/16 bolts), drill and tap one hole only. I used 5/16 - 18 Stainless Steel Bolts. Although there were eight holes in the bracket, I used only six bolts.

6) Unclamp the bracket from your kicker and Bolt the bracket to the boat using this one bolt.

7) Make sure all of the markings still line up with the bracket holes, and then drill the remaining holes using the bracket itself as a template. This will guarantee that all bolts will line up perfectly.

8) Remove the bracket from the boat and tap the remaining holes.

9) Remove the masking tape and install the bracket using a sealant such as 3m 5200 liberally on each bolt. Put a bit in each hole and and some under each bolt head.

10) Install kicker and go trolling! There is a picture on my personal page that shows the transom area of my boat.

Make sure to drill the holes deep enough to allow the tap to cut full size threads for the length bolts you are using. Remember, you only need enough threads to double the diameter of the bolt (another rule of thumb is the first six threads). For example, if you are using 1/4 inch bolts, you only need a half inch of threads for full strength. Use a stop on the drill to get the correct depth on each hole. In our example above, this would be about 3/4 of an inch deep. If you don't have a drill stop, wrap masking tape around the drill at the correct height.
