If your boat has the notched transom then you need a short shaft (15) motor,

I have a '71 13' Sport and just bought a '92 Yamaha 40hp. The shaft is ~21-22". Is it possible to use this motor?

Do you have a notched transom? If so, you would have to use a transdapter. If not yes you can use it.
