I have a 24' outrage with twin merc salt water opti 150s. After 10 years in salt water, it is time to repower.
My mechanic is recomending twin 4 stroke yamahas - 150 hp each.

I would be very interested to hear your views on what to repower with and any good or bad experiences.

I have always been very impressed with Yamaha. You might want to consider a single 4.2L F300 (weight is 560lbs or so). Lighter than your twins and will probably have same peformance or better. A set of twin F150s will weigh in at 1,000 lbs. Not sure what your stern weight limitation is for your year outrage.

I just repowered a 22' Guardian that previously had twin yamaha F150s on it with a single F225 and am very pleased with performance.

Rule of thumb is that twins loose 30% of efficiency over a single motor setup. Of course redundency may outweigh this factor for those heading offshore great distances.

I have a friend with a 24' Outrage that he repowered with a single Yamaha 250 OX66. That is a perfect combination. The boat is good for 47 MPH and can (and does) haul a LOT of weight.

If I were you I'd consider the venerable Yamaha F250 or the new 4.2 liter 250 Offshore.

I agree with Shad - if you don't need twins, the Yamaha F300 Offshore would be a great choice. You'll save a LOT of weight, your mileage and maintenance costs will improve and it likely will end up being cheaper than F150s.

Delayed delivery on the engine - now end of February 2012.
In the interim I am doing short video of boat before with the twin 150 hp mercs - tops out at 38 knots and will let you know on top end etc of new yamaha f300

Some 8 years later and the Yamaha 300 is still going strong
Tops out at 36 knots so lost 2 knots top end but saved a load on fuel
Boat definitely handled better with twins

Thanks for the update. I also have 24' Outrage (1995) with a Yamaha HPDI 250. Will be repowering in the future. My brother bought a new Yamaha 250 and put it on his non Whaler 22' center console. It is a beast for sure. Same block as your 300. i am torn between the Yamaha 300 and the Suzuki for my re-power.

Can you tell a positive difference with the weight on the back being lighter, Did the twins just track better?

I am surprised that a single lower unit and same hp would be slower. Have you tried messing with height adjustment as 4 strokes tend to like higher mounting for best performance.

The 300hp is lighter than the twin 150hp mercs The water line had to be redone as it was some 4 inches Higher in the water at the stern I am very happy with 300 and would not go any less. The Yamaha 300hp is a great engine. I have just over 500 hours on her and she is a beast

I repowered my 19 guardian a few months back with a150 hp Yamaha and it was a close contest with the Suzuki 140 hp At the end went with Yamaha as it was a better price and longer warranty

There are lots of opinions on Suzuki vs Yamaha and it may just come down to price/warranty/and local service

Twins definitely tracked better especially at low speed

That is the first time I have ever heard a yamaha was cheaper than a Suzuki and had a longer warranty as Suzuki in the states is 6yrs.
