Well I figured that was a given... did some of that last night on our way back to the neck from the blue oar. It was my cousin Gil's birthday so we had a little party on the sand bar on the south side of haddam island.

you could try clinton/westbrook - clinton harbor - put in at the Clinton boat ramp on riverside drive. The harbor is very pretty. it's a short run to Bill's seafood in westbrook for a fun lunch stop. there are sandbars around the clinton town beach that are a fun time too with a small whaler. just my 2 cents

Spend a day exploring the Thimble Islands off of Branford. Lots of history, nice lunch spots, some good fishing spots. Very nice area.

I have been wanting to get down there with my own boat. I went down there with a biology class in college and we did some experiments on one of the islands. Certainly is a really cool place. Do you know where you could launch?

Launch at the state launch in the Branford river it will be closer to the islands in case it's a bit rough out in the sound for you but is a very busy river. Or a little longer ride you can launch at the state launch on the East river on the Guilford Madison line. You have to go through Madison down to the very end of Neck Road. Beautiful spot and not ever busy I kept my boat in that river when I was 12 grew up there. You should have a good depth finder, GPS and or be very good navigating with charts if you don't know the area, Guilford and Branford especially the thimbles are very rocky. You'll see the locals going places you didn't think you could.

Awayland- Thank you for the response. I have a depth finder on my boat just for that reason. I also have an app on my Iphone whith charts and yes I know how to read them. Also if I know I am going to go somewhere shallow I throw the trolling motor on so I dont have to take any chances. I love seeing how far up little rivers I can go but I hate rocks.

There are three rivers to explore in a boat like yours right from the East River boat launch. East river the largest, you can go quite far at lower tides and may not make it under the 1st railroad bridge at dead high tide. The other 2 are Neck river and Baileys creek you should do those at high tide.

I grew up in East Lyme and I think the Niantic River is one of the greatest little estuaries around. You can ski, fish, swim, clam, cruise etc. And it is perfect for a small boat like the 13 you have. There is a nice state launching area near the highway bridge/railroad bridge at the river entrance. It is well maintained, paved, and has lots of parking...has two floating piers too, making it easy to get into the boat once launched. Also, outside the river, you are in Niantic Bay...lots to see there and fish/swim too.
Also, I noticed your boat came from Boats Inc, which is still in business on the Niantic River...although I think they don't sell Whalers any longer.
If you want a longer adventure, launch in the Thames River and go up from New London to Norwich. Lots to see on the Thames. For another nice harbor, do Mystic River...lots of boats, houses, and of course, Mystic Seaport.
Happy Boating!
Al

Thanks for the reply Al,
Actually I Have been in the niantic river may times as a good friend of mine has a house on black point. We would always take his 17 montauk up in the river and jump off the cliffs. Also around the other side of black point is great for crabbing or just hanging out. I have been wanting to go up the Thames river for a while now and my wife and I just did the Mystic river and went out to Fisher island. That was a great time and would recomend that to anyone as we got out ther in our little 13. Thanks again!

Last night on the news they said the Niantic river has very high bacteria levels right now but the state cannot close it to swimmers because there a no public swimming areas there. Happens every year in there.

When in the Thames River, don't get too close to nor hang around the submarines berthed at the Naval Submarine Base in Groton. The nearby Electric Boat shipyard is also a sensitive area. And if you pass a submarine which is underway, be prepared for an unusual and very powerful wake from it.

Went to launch from mystic river but the state launch is for car top. No other launch comes up in that area Brooks. Can you give me an address or street name for the one you used? My wife and I ended up cruising back over to the state launch in niantic. Really nice area to go out from. Plenty of parking although it was a Monday. They have bait shops and a package store all right there so it's pretty ideal.
