am considering options for a new or used motor for 1972 13 sport short shaft. I have been told that only Mercury makes a remote 25 or 30 short shaft. Are there other options for a new motor or suggestions for used?

Someone misinformed you.
The short shafts are coming back again.

Evinrude 25/30
Honda 25/30
Tohatsu 25/30/40
Yamaha 25

Here is a pic of my '08 25hp Merc/Tohatsu, 4 stroke short shaft powered '61 13 foot Whaler. Tohatsu makes all Mercs up to 30 hp. The motor is mounted on a 5" setback bracket. This motor is flawless, burns very little gas, make hardly any noise and starts just like your car. It runs 28-29 mph GPS. Its a great outboard. I believe Merc/Tohats and Tohatsu are the only short shaft remote outboards available. Yamaha makes a 25 short shaft but as a tiller motor.

Yamaha 25 has both electric and tiller according to their website.

I have no idea what is wrong with the Evinrude website.
I can't find any specifications at all for any of their engines. Not good for Evinrude....

The Evinrude website is not chrome friendly, it works with firefox and IE.

Evinrude does not have an electric start or power tilt until you get to the long shaft. It's really too bad, because if they did the would get a lot more of the small boat business.

If you want to raise the transom, then Evinrude is a player in the market, otherwise it goes as follows:

Honda - electric start / Manual Tilt 25HP, 30HP
Yamaha - electric start / Power Tilt 25HP
Tohatsu/Merc - electric start / power tilt 25HP,30HP,40HP

The Tohatsu 40HP is right at the weight limit of 200 pounds suggested by Whaler for the older 13 foot hulls, but not too over the limit coming in at 205. If your looking used, then almost everyone is a player or if you want to raise your transom height then it opens up more options.

The Tohatsu/Nissan 40hp short shaft is not a good fit for a 13 ft. Whaler, although it is a 2 stroke with power trim and tilt, it weighs 213 lbs. and it is an electric start tiller model as is the Yamaha 25.

The choice of a new motor is very limited.
If you want used the best choice is a 31.8 cu. in. OMC. they are the type of motor the 13 footer was designed for at 110lbs. They were built from 1978 to 2005 and came in 20-25-30-35 hp models and in long or short shaft, electric remote controlled, or manual start. The only difference in the various hp ratings is the carb and all are interchangeable.
