Thread subject: Whaler Central - Boston Whaler Boat Information and Photos :: Montauk Repower Question

Seems like a wealth of information on the site, but having trouble finding info on the Yamaha F70LA and how it could do pulling a skier on a classic Montauk.

I have a 1986 Montauk and am debating between a Yamaha F70LA and a F90TLR. Mostly using the boat for cruising around and running around the Chesapeake, but would like to be able to pull a skier. Do you think the 70 would have enough power to pull a sub 170lb skier?

Thanks

I have never seen anyone NOT buy a 17 Montauk because it had a 90 hp.

We have an article on "Current Engine Choices and Weights".
http://www.whalercentral.com/articles...ticle_id=5

The 2 best choices for HP to Weight:
1. E-Tec 90 @ 320 lbs
2. Yamaha F70 @ 260 lbs

Another place to see what motors members have is in the personal page section. Scroll down to the 16/17 models.

I used to ski behind my 1978 Montauk with an Evinrude 70 hp 2 stroke.
Don't know about a 4 stroke...

70 will be fine but 90 will be better. I have a 90 Yamaha on mine moved from 70 Evinrude. Same weight back on the transom but 20 more HP. Even uses the bolt holes left by the 70

I think the 70 would be a bit anemic if trying to get an adult slalom skier up. I Just repowered my 1984 Montauk with the F90A Suzuki- it is a very good match for the boat. 341 lbs, 2.58:1 lower unit, and a peak rpm of 6300. I completed the 10 hr break in on less than 10 gallons of gas. I was bumping the rev limiter with a 14 x 18 prop and a moderate load, switched to a 14 x 20. This thing gets out of the hole like a 2 stroke, and easily tops 40 mph. Most importantly, at 3500 - 4000 rpm it gets excellent fuel economy. A very good match for the Montauk.

Joe: I believe it came out in 2009. The new Suzuki 90 is about 70 lbs. lighter than the previous version (410 vs. 341), and thus far has a good track record for reliability according to a Suzuki tech that I trust.
By the way, wonderful site.

Patrick-
Not sure if you have already repowered, but my F70 Yamaha on my 1973 17' hull has no problem pulling me up on one ski & I'm 180# & usually have my wife & 3 kids in the boat.
