I have an unusual problem with the power trim/tilt on my 2000 Merc 90 2-stroke. While returning from a trip the other day the motor was tilting all the way down and not shutting off. It would shut off for a while then try going down again. I was not pushing any of the buttons (throttle switch or engine switch). I was able to raise the engine again with the the throttle switch, but then it would go back down. (note: it is not going down from leakage, the motor is driving it back down). At the dock, I had similar problems like it had a mind of its own. I finally took off the cover and disconnected a couple of the wires to the relays to shut it off. Because it stops on its own, i don't think it is the switch getting stuck. "Ghosts in the Machine". Any ideas... possibly moisture in the relays (although there is no indication under the cowl, bad relay or other? Appreciate any help.

This is just a guess but I would try lubricating the switches at the motor and the throttle as it cuold be that one is sticking without showing physical signs of it. Relay problem sounds possible but I have never had that problem in a lot of years of outboard ownership.

Not sure if Merc has two separate relays for the up and down trim, but if so, swap their positions to see if the engine goes the other way, and if not you;ve eliminated the relays as the problem.
