My 35hP has 3 possible holes to attach my steering rod link arm to. I chose the hole that is furthest out on the bracket or closest to the bow. I haven't had any problems steering or anything but I have seen a number of pictures lately and none of them show the link rod connected to this forward most hole. Is the hole you choose merely about preference? I would think this hole would make the steering easier and possibly turn further. On second thought maybe that's why it isn't used, hahaha. If anyone can shed some light I'd appreciate it.

I wondered the same thing a few days ago.
My motor has two holes and is attached to the one closest to the motor.
I would proffer that the hole selection has to do with the turning ratio of the steering helm. Some helms are 4 turns, lock to lock, while others are 3.
Remembering my geometry, the closer you mount the arm the larger the degree of pivot of the motor.

I hated geometry but now that you mention it I think you are right. The hole closest to the power head would give the most turn.

And you guys thought math class was a waste of time.

The inner most hole is ALWAYS for the link arm off the steering rod, for reasons mentioned. The outer holes are for dual engine tie bars.

Larry's answer makes total sense.
Clear, concise and skips the math part (yay!).
