I have recently restored a 1967 13' whaler, powered by a 20hp johnson. When you go to start the motor the starter engages and begans turning the motor over. However after a couple of seconds the starter drive kicks out. If you watch the drive while its turning it is traveling up and down by 1/4" to 1/2" before finally kicking out. All this happens in a matter of 2 no more than 3 seconds. I know you can buy a new gear drive for the starter and a springs kit. Any recommendations?

Sounds like a weak Bendix spring or the outboard motor equivilant of one.

Should we assume you have a good battery. The battery and connections would be where I would start.
