I am going to install the drum cable steering on my 1966 13 Boston Whaler. I have read several articles on this and I understand how to install this system. My question is about the tension of the springs. I seem to remember but can't find the post about the tension of the springs. One was 3/4 compressed, the other was half compressed. Is this correct and if it is which spring gets 3/4 and which gets 1/2 compressed?

Try 1/4 to 1/3 compressed and if it feels too loose tighten alittle bit more till it feels right. If too tight all components will wear out too soon and the bolts holding the stern pulleys will start to tear the fiberglass/gelcoat.

I have the original cable steering instructions that came with my boat. I just put a pic of it on my personal page.
I hope this helps.
I also just put a new cable on my steering set up.
I guess that the spring needs to be tight enough so that the cable does not uncoil from the drum when you tilt the motor.
