Anyone have any ideas on how to deal with the missing insulation on the cowling of my old 70 Merc? I was thinking about spray on stuff that is fire proof that I could shape to fit.. dunno if that is smart or feasible though.
Beautiful here, but I am on the trailer, and cleaning the carbs...sigh.

Nevermind- I heard bad things happen. Best Idea I heard is to hand out ear plugs...

There are a variety of vehicle underhood blanket type insulations. Maybe something like that installed with some 3M 77 spray adhesive.

I heard somewhere else the flywhel grabbed in one guy's motor, chewed it up, and the carbs ate it..

Seems like a legit concern.

The disintegrating insulation on my 1990 225 Evinrude and it leaving crumbs all over the motor prompted me to take it apart, sand and paint the lower and upper cowling pieces outside & inside then add new decals from Bombardier this winter (a lot more work than I planned on).

A local marina had sheets of new insulation that's sticky backed one side with a peel off and a chrome reflective foil on the other side. Came in sheets 19.5 inches by 39 inches and about 1/2 to 5/8 thick. Easy to cut to fit.

But no label of where it came from. Might be worth asking around.

I was over at the marina where I purchased the insulation this morning. Turns out they also sell clips to help attach the insulation to the cowling. They usually use and sell the insulation and clips for I/O cowlings. And it's fire retardant.

They're sold out of the insulation but I noticed on the package of clips it came from Volvo Penta.
