GOOD DAY ALL, I HAVE A 120 HP 1989 EVINRUDE AND I AM TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHAT A VALVE ON MY ENGINE DOES, I CANNOT FIND IT ANYWHERE IN THE FACTORY SERVICE MANUAL. IT IS LOCATED PORT SIDE JUST BELOW AND SLIGHTLY FORWARD OF THE FUEL PUMP. THERE IS A RED KNOB WITH A POINTER AND IT SWINGS FROM 6:00 TO 12:00 COUNTER CLOCKWISE WHEN LOOKING AT IT FROM THE REAR OF THE MOTOR. iT DOES NOT APPEAR TO BE A FUEL SHUT-OFF BUT I WAS WONDERING IF IT MAY BE A LEAN RICH ADJUSTMENT. A FRIEND SAID HE HAD A VALVE LIKE THAT FOR INJECTING FOGGING OIL BUT I CANNOT SEE WHERE YOU WOULD ATTACH A FOGGING OIL CAN. ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED. THE ENGINE DID HAVE VRO BUT IS CURRENTLY BEING RUN ON PREMIX.

THANKS

That is the primer valve. It is normally closed but if yo ever have to rope start your motor, you would open that valve, squeeze the primer bulb a few times to squirt gas into he carbs, then close the valve again and start the motor.

Sometimes there is a Schrader valve on top so you can connect a can of fogging oil or Engine Tuner to it and directly squirt those fluids into the carbs.

Thanks Tom, do you know if 6:00 or 12:00 is closed, there are no markings on it and what would happen if it were in the wrong position while the enginen was running?.
Thanks

The engine would flood and stop running in the wrong position.

You can also add the Schrader Valve so you can fog the engine. It is a kit you can buy from Evinrude. I added one to my 1985 Evinrude after I first bought it.

Thanks Joe,
that would mean 6:00 is the closed position for anyone else playing with a new(to me) engine.
I had it at 12:00 the other day and smoked like crazy but didnt die so I had no idea what the thing did.

You and Tom are the best, this old girl would never have seen water again without your help!

I just looked at my Operators manual.
It does show the red lever facing rear at 6:00 for normal operation and about 1:00 when in manual prime position....

I also found the receipt for the Schrader Valve.
It was $5.02 back in August of 2003
