Hi all I'm a newbie at whalers and boats. i just bought my first bw sport 15 last week. its still getting some work done on it. it did not come with a bow hatch cover. now i asked on another site if their was supposed to be hinges or not and i could not get a clear answer. some said yes some said no. i looked at the wood placement diagrams for the 15 dated in 1975. my boat being a 1976 should reflect the diagram right? according to the diagram there are wood placements where the bow hinges would go. I want to be sure that there is wood support where the hinges would go for obvious reasons. having a hinged hatch is better than having it fly off into my face while the vessel is underway i think. so its important for me to secure it. Can I also use the bow hatch as a livewell? thanks. I'm going to ask a lot of dumb questions so be warned!!

Markho,

Your 1976 model should be the same, or very close to, the 1975 model.

I believe the hatch was made from Mahogany plywood but maybe others here that have owned, or own, that model can be more specific.

I also believe there are hinges for the front locker on your model.
Once you get the boat I am sure you will see the holes where the hinges used to be.

I have a 1979 Sport 15' and although I had to replace the bow hatch cover, it did originally have hinges. See my personal page

wow the grain on the wood of your 1979 is just gorgeous!! i have refinished floors and furniture before so i am olloking forward to refinishing the beatup wood on my 1976. that is one heck of a job! kudos. I have to llok into getting a mahogany piece big enough for the hatch, do lumber yards regularly stock them or will i have to order it special from the internet? BTW, what size cooler coul i fit behind the bench?

I replaced all of the wood on mine. Luckily I had the old weathered componants to use as a template to cut out the new parts. Then I sanded and sanded and sanded......13 coats of varnish......The hatch was cut out of teak plywood.

Was the hatch originally made out of Mahogany plywood?
That is what I remember. Not that teak wouldn't look great, just want to know for the record if it was Mahogany plywood.
