I want to buy a stainless prop for my son in law's 17 Montauk with a 90 hp merc. The hull stencil # is 3B522 and the prop seems to be #D2201 which is the aluminium prop that came with the motor [mid 1990's I would guess] any info or suggestions would be appreciated.

Not enough information for the boat or motor.
The stencil number is 6 characters long. You only show 5.....

There is probably an HIN plate on the back of the transom which will give us the precise year....
I would guess it is a
1980 Montauk 17' but that is only a guess.
Need to know the more precise year of the Mercury 90hp and which gear case it has....

Sorry it is 3B1522. I looked at the link and it seems as though it might be a 1977. He knows I am sure but is out of the country now. The merc I was just guessing at the year, and thought the prop # seemed odd. Unfortunately the boat is not near by to me or him at this time.

I had a 1978 Montauk with a 1985 Eviinrude 70 HP.
I had 2 props.
1. 15 pitch
2. 17 pitch
Both props fell within range of the WOT recommendations for the motor.
The 15 pitch had a better hole shot but the 17 pitch gave a mph or two faster at top speed.
What pitch prop are you using now?
What is your WOT with that prop?

I have no info on the existing other than the D2201. I have never run his boat but Saturday we were running side by side at WOT. I was in my 1985 18' Outrage with a Yamaha 115 4 stroke and turning 5600 rpm. He had 4 people and I had 5 on board, I was just a little faster. I just need someone to get the current prop info as I think it is the correct size and pitch. He and my daughter are on honeymoon out of the country, and I wanted to get him a stainless prop as a birthday present. I guess I will just wait. Thanks for you help.

"D2201" does not tell us anything, it is not a propeller part number. The propeller part number will be cast into the end of the hub. You may have to remove it to see it, but it will be there.
If the "D2201" is stamped into the prop it is just a reference number or a prop shop that has repaired or modified the prop in the past. I see numbers like those quite often. Bottom line: you don't know what the prop is now because it has been worked on.

A three cylinder mid-1990s Mercury 90 HP on a Montauk should be running a 13-1/4" x 20" Mercury Laser II or a 13-1/4" x 19" Stiletto Advantage.

Thank you. I am not sure he ever has had the prop worked on but that makes sense. I have a 13.25 x 17k aluminium prop that came off my new 2004 115 yamaha 4 stroke 115 hp and a stainless 21k that came off an old 115 yamaha 2 stroke 115 hp. They both seem to be the same diameter and I assume the 21k is 21 pitch. When we can I might try the stainless one.
The aluminium prop I replaced with a Michigan Ballistic 13.5x17 [on my 18 Outrage] and have been very happy with it. Of course then I had all the necessary info in hand. When we make a final decision I will report the results.

Tom,
I found this old thread about my son in laws boat. Finally have some current info on the prop he had. Still no engraved numbers on the old aluminum except there is 17p at the end of a series of very small numbers on the side of the prop. I measured the radius of the old prop and doubled it to get diameter. It is 13 1/4" as best I can tell [it came with this prop from Mercury dealer] As mentioned in my reply in the above thread, we have not tested the boat with the 12 5/8x21 K stainless. The Mercury also does not have a hole for a cotter pin like the Yamaha, it had a stainless retaining washer with ears to flatten down to attach to the prop. Is adding a second nut behind the first one a suitable way to ensure the prop not becoming loose? The thrust washer from the Yamaha also fit fine, and I installed it and a stainless washer behind the hub, just as it had been on the Yamaha. The splines aligned fine when I slid the stainless on the shaft.

Yes, that is almost certainly a 13-1/4" x 17" Mercury aluminum three blade, part # 48-77344. That is NOT a good propeller for a Montauk with a Mercury 90; no where near enough pitch. A Mercury 90 on a Montauk usually runs a 12-3/4" x 21" Aluminum Mercury prop if it runs an aluminum prop at all. This was a very common dealer installed propeller back in the day. As already mentioned, the 13-1/4" x 20" Mercury Laser II (or Quicksilver Lightspeed) is a much better Mercury/Quicksilver brand propeller choice.
If you have a 12-3/4" x 21" Yamaha stainless steel propeller, it is probably a Painted Stainless Steel model. "K" Series is not a model of propeller buy merely the size of the hub indicating what class of motor it is meant for. There are several Yamaha "K" Series stainless steel propeller models to choose from and as a matter of fact, the Yamaha "K" Series Performance Three Blade is the same propeller as the Stiletto Advantage and the Turbo 1; all three are made by Precision Propeller Industries, Inc.
If you want to try your Yamaha prop on the Mercury 90 just use the Mercury prop nut and tab washer instead of the Yamaha prop nut.

Thanks again for the advice. I was confused about the notched thrust washer on the aluminum prop as I could not detach it and started to think it was permanently attached to the hub. After seeing pictures of hub kits I realized that it was just bonded to the hub from being a dissimilar metal. We will report back as to performance[unfortunately he has no tach] but I did see a GPS when I visited.
