hi guys, i have a 2003 v4 2 stroke 90hp Johnson on my beloved 1986 whaler 17ft super sport.......i just redid my interior and would like to install a temperature gauge (its an omc gauge that i purchased at a garage sale circa 2002) and matches my other gauges perfectly...... when i pull off the engine cover i see two blank holes in each cylinder head...i assume they are for a temp sender...the block is not painted at these spots...i measured the hole at roughly 3/8 inch wide.....could anyone help me with what model sender to purchase.....help greatly appreciated [ i ordered one form go2marine but it was wayyy too big...it said thread size 3/8 in ch npt, but the sender seemed to have girth of at least 5/8 of an inch ....help!

I would look those parts up at the "BRP Parts Catalog" site.
We have that link in our "Vendors Web Links" section on the left sidebar.

checked out the brp catalogue....they dont have a temp sender......but each cyl head (pot and stbd) has a 'temp switch' i recognize these from seeing my engine head today....but i dot think this is what i want....dont i want something that fills one of the two blank holes?

Yes.
I think you want a Temperature Sending Unit that would screw into the head.

We are talking about Water temperature and not Water pressure, correct?

I had a Temperature gauge on my 1999 Johnson 175... The temperature sending unit screwed into the head and the wire went to the gauge on the console. Worked great.

EDIT:
I found it under Accessories.....
Water Temperature Gauge
Sending Unit Assembly #0174675

I also found the Tech Series gauge for the Water Temp Gauge kit. That was figure number 1......
What style of OMC/BRP gauge do you have? The Tech Series?

Disclaimer:
I would definitely check with your local Evinrude dealer as I am not a BRP parts man nor am I affiliated with OMC/BRP in any way shape or form...
The information above is what I found in the BRP Online Parts Catalog and just passing it on to you....

The links don't work like that on their site...

1. Select One = OB Accessories
2. 2001-2004
3. Instruments
4. Outboard Water Temperature Gauge Kits
5. There you would look at #10 and that is the Water Temperature Sending Unit Assembly with the part number I gave you above.

PS....
You didn't answer my question on which BRP style gauge you have.

You can also take a look at this link below, sounds like it may be the same diagram Joe referenced. If you also order the sending unit mounting bracket, you'll be able to use the sending unit regardless. The bracket mounts by removing one of the water jacket bolts and when its mounted, the sending unit threads into it and presses up against the head to get the correct temp.

Dave,

Good one.
Yes, that is the same drawing that they took off the BRP site.
I am assuming that you get everything in the kit except the gauge if you order #10... At least that it what it looks like on the BRP site. The part numbers are the same but it is for the Tech Series gauge.
That is why I asked what gauge series he has...

29.30 for the Sending Unit Assembly for Tech Series gauge (and Acculine series)

I have never know anyone to have the Acculine series as they didn't make those series very long.
See this article on OMC/BRP gauges. Look at the Acculine and the Tech series gauges.
http://www.whalercentral.com/articles...icle_id=43

I used to have the Traditional series but many things are no longer compatible with that series as it has been discontinued.
Here are my new Tech Series Gauges.

Always best to talk to a dealer when ordering to make sure........

I had one of those on my '83 115 johnson and worked great. Yes, the sender rests on the head to get a reading and what I did was to mark the area that the sender was in and removed the paint there so that it would work better, thought the paint would insulate the head is why I removed the paint in a round shape to match the sender.

Thom,

Are you referring to a "Cylinder Head" temperature gauge?

Water Temperature is different as far as I have seen.
You can't get water temperature unless you are in contact with the water.

Good point.
We should have consciencebay show us a photo of his gauge so we know for sure what he has.

Hi Joe, well I guess thats what it would tell, as I don't think, if memory serves, that the water side is accessable. I also was looking at the referance post that Dave had and that is the kit that I had.

I don't remember what the sending unit looked like on the 1999 Johnson 175 as I didn't put it in...

I have never seen the gauge that I had either. Just can't find it.
I have found other OMC Water Temp gauges and kits like the one they show. 0175410 is the complete kit with gauge.

I am assuming that the gauge alone is #174682 but not positive as the one I found was called a Head Temp...
See attached photo.
My gauge did not look like that even though I thought it had this same part number.
Mine had the temp in numbers and was Tech Series.

Here is a complete kit I found new for $20. This includes the sending unit, wire, clips, etc....
You can scroll through the photos of all the parts b clicking on "View More Images"...
http://www.oempartsllc.com/gaugeomche...elnew.aspx
Again, this is not the gauge I had...

I have been searching for good photos of the different gauges but haven't found anything worth posting yet.

Does anyone have a good photo of the Temperature gauge that shows degrees of temperature in Fº ????
I have a small photo but not good enough to show the details.
I am trying to find the part number of this gauge. (it may be the same as above but with Fº degrees instead of the Green Arc.....

Ok, I found a photo of a Classic Series (not the newer Tech Series) gauge.
This one shows both ºF and ºC

Mine was like this but in the Tech Series that has both a red circle and a white circle around the outside of the inner dial.

The gauge shown below will not work with the newer sending unit according to the BRP website.

Yep... That is the Tech Series.
That is the one I had.
The kit number shows 0175410 but I am not sure what the number on the gauge is...

I saw that but didn't want to post it in case someone was already looking at buying that one.

Can you look on the gauge and tell us the Part Number?

I had the tech series as well but, don't have all the info. anymore as it was a long time ago.

There are two types of Tech Series.
One with the Green Arc and the other with degrees in ºF and ºC

The one with the Green Arc seems to be part #174682
I am not sure about the part # for the ºF model

Anyone know for sure what the other part # is ?

the image on this page is my temp gauge....wish i knew how to get it in the actual thread like Joe and others have figured out how to do! how frustrating and user UNfriendly! i tried copying and pasting etc etc...but if anyone can go see , id be grateful to see if this gauge works with my sender that i ordered (the one of the BRP site)

That is a Traditional Series Temp Gauge.
I don't think that sender you bought will work as the sender says it is for the Tech Series Gauge. However, I do not know for sure so I would suggest you ask an Evinrude dealer.
