I just replaced the rub rail on my 13' Sport GLS. While it came out really nice, it wasn't easy a definite 8 of 10 on the difficulty scale. The one thing that doesn't look right is at the back where you wrap and screw it to the transom. You can see a small gap between where I cut the rigid plastic piece and where the black rub rail wraps to the transom. I want to order end caps from Prime Industries, a Whaler Central vendor, but can't figure out which ones will work. I compared the rub rail profile from the install diagram to the profiles in the Prime Industries catalog (pp.20-22), but nothing seems to match. Has anyone else purchased end caps for a 13' Sport or 13' Sport GLS, and if so which part number(s) did you go with? I'll call them tomorrow and ask as today is Memorial Day, thanks in advance for any input!

I found Prime Industries SS rail mounts in West Marine, they appear to be the manufacturer. I agree nice stuff!

Let us know if you figure this out. My rub rail is good in all but the end cap areas and these caps would be just the ticket if I can figure out what ones to buy.

I'll let you know how I make out once they arrive. I ordered two different sets figuring one would work. They weren't very helpful, the person had no product knowledge simply took orders.

Thanks Rick, Wish I could see a profile picture of the rub rail on your boat to compare it with mine. It is very hard to tell from their catalog photo what cap might work.

We have to love these sites that say call in for technical answers and then you get some order taker who probably does not know what a rub rail is! I can't speak for this company but a few around here expect great things from new hires @ minimum wages.

There's a profile picture of my rub rail under Downloads/Installation & Parts Breakdown Sheets/15'/17' Rub Rail Installation on page 2. It's the same kit for the 13' that's used on the 15'/17', the instructions sheet references all three lengths.

Not sure if any end cap will cover the damage but it seems like a very expensive and laborious job to replace it all for this one bad spot.

Thanks for the heads up on these parts. I am replacing my rub rail with the tree piece all white rail from BW. It's the one they used on the 40 anniversary I believe. Looking at the profile pictures at prime industries I'm sure it's part #87411L & 87411R.

It looks like they have a few end caps that could work. I called and they don't know but asked me what company makes the rub rails on our boats. She mentions Barbour and Taco and manufacturers but I don't know if either of these companies manufactured or rub rails.

They do have one on the specialty page 24 that looks great and could solve my problem but it is very hard to tell if the angles will work.

Does anyone know what company makes our rub rails?

Have you considered calling Sue at Twin Cities, she is great at researching OEM parts and finding a source.

One point that needs emphasizing is the Sport 13 GLS did not have rub rail end caps so there is not such thing as OE rub rail ends caps for this boat.

If one wants to use a rub rail end cap, one should select one that looks nice, but researching Whaler OEMs for this part will be fruitless.

One reason NOT to use a rub rail end cap on t his boat is that those stern corners are ALWAYS the first to get crunched in a hard landing at the dock. Having a robust piece of stainless steel will just mean the hull will receive more damage when the hard landing occurs.

Part numbers 87411L/87411R ($9.15 ea. & shipping) will fit if you bend where they attach to the transom and trim off the black rub rail. My brother-in-law is going to re-polish them when I'm done, he works with metals. If the pictures aren't viewable here they should be on my personal page. Sorry I stink adding pics.

That is what I figured when I viewed the pictures from their site.
Seems a bit odd that this company makes some very nice stuff but does not have a clue about what a BW needs as far as fitment.

I have to agree with Tom about his statement though. Mine took a pretty hard hit or was rubbing on the dock which caused the problem in the above picture. I have to wonder had it not been the rubber rub rail, would I have more damage in that corner!

I'll also ask if anyone who replaced their rub rails happens to have a good corner piece laying around I sure would like to try some fancy cutting and gluing to get me fixed up. I think it has to be from the starboard side to be a perfect match.

Received the corners yesterday and the rub rail profile is perfect but they are meant to be used with a 90 deg transom corner.

The transom on my presmirked Montauk is about 15 degrees off from 90 degrees. Not sure if it would be stated at about 75 degrees or about 105 degrees. We also have to consider it a compound angle as the transom itself has a vertical angle.

Any rub rail end cap would pretty much have to be specifically designed to fit the particular hull angles.

I could make the caps out of nice Teak that would look pretty sharp but it would take some time and effort and as Tom said, the first hard landing at the dock would either wipe it out or could cause more damage than just the rubber bumper might.

I still need to find a member who replaced their rub rail and has that old end left over so I can attempt to piece it in.

It would be more than 90 so it would be 100+ degrees. Might be able to make it work if I can find some kind of white rubber that can be carved to make up the gap. That would also add some cushion if you hit the dock because it would be fit between the endcap and the transom.
