I am looking for information in swaping out my Merc 90 for a E-TEC 90. I own a 17' 1989 Montauk. Long or short shaft and any information on mounting
height? I believe it is a 20" transom.

Roger -- The Evinrude E-TEC 90 is a very popular power choice for the classic Montauk. You will love it.

Be sure the motor is NOT installed all the way down on the transom or even just one hole up. It should two or three holes up on the transom.

For a propeller, I recommend either the 13-7/8" x 17" BRP Viper or the 13-1/4" x 15" Stiletto Advantage 4.25. The latter will cost less money and give slightly better performance. Both props use the same hub kit.

Roger please give an update on that Etec 90 after you have it broken in and all. I am thinking of retring my 1998 115 johnson for either the 90 or 115 etec. So I am looking for all and any feed back on those motors.

There is no break-in needed on the E-Tec motors.
Turn the key and go from day one....
First service is at 300 hours....

Joe I still thougth there was a break-in on those motors. Do to the computer high oiling and what not. I thought I read where you had to go back in after a short time and have the computer reset or something like. But now that I am typing this out I now think I might be thinking of 4 strokes.

The computer takes care of the oiling so the owner/operator doesn't need to do anything but go...

See the Evinrude website. They state No Break-In period.
No service for 3 years or 300 hours. That means you don't have to take it to any dealer for anything (except a malfunction) until 3 years or 300 hours is up.

no break-in required. Assuming you have it set to the correct oil from the start you never have to return to the dealer until you hit 300 hours of normal recreational use.
Some dealers will not set the engine oil to XD100 until after break-in because there were some early issues. I believe all those have been solved.

I have a 175HP e-tec, if you have any questions about the engine, feel free to ask. There is at least one or two members here that run 90HP.

Thanks for the heads up. My dad has been hinting at me to buy a 4 stroke yammy for the whaler. But there is just something about those Etec that keep drawing me back to them and it certainly isn't the price tag. BRP thinks really highly of those motors. From all of my research the etec seems to stand toe to toe with the 4 strokes and has better torque than them as well.

I have an '09 e-tec. 90 hp. It's the best thing in my boats 43 year old life. Use the xd 100 and from day one use it like u stole it. Just remember the 115 requires an external oil tank the 90's is under the cowl.

I had mine set to XD100 from the start and have run her hard since day 2. Why not day 1 you ask, simply because the first time i pushed the throttle up it knocked be back in the RPS and scared me, i figured i should work up to that. The only issue i have ever had, was a low oil alarm, the 175 has the external oil tank and if it's getting low in rough seas, you can get air bubbles in the oil line. Not a huge issue to resolve once you know what's going on. Other than that she runs quiet and really pushes the boat.
