Working on my 85 Evinrude V4 90 HP and trying to get the lower unit separated from the exhaust housing. It is not budging!

I have the shop service manual and have removed all the correct screws and bolts including the shift rod screw under the carbs. I can get the forward portion to start but the rear wants to stay tight.

One question I do have is the gear shift is supposed to be in reverse position and I assume that is toward the rear but I could be wrong.

Any advice would sure be appreciated if anyone is on and has tips.

Is there a bolt under/behind the Zinc anode under the cavitation plate ?

Not sure about that far back, but there is definitely a bolt under the plate of my 1992 V4 Evinrude 90.

There are 6 bolts that hold the lower unit onto the exhaust housing. The 4 visable bolts on either side then the 2 hiden bolts under the aft end of the av plate, one of which is behind the trim tab. Be sure to mark the trim tab so you can place it back to where the setting was. Oh yea, when installing the bolts use alittle tripple guard grease on the body of the bolt to help keep corrosion down, do not use an anti-size compound as the graphite and alum. don't get along.

Thanks guys. Like I said "I have the shop service manual and have removed all the correct screws and bolts including the shift rod screw under the carbs." This includes the 4 visible bolts as well as the ones in the stuck rear section that hold the trim tab on and the zink in place and a large bolt that holds the lower unit in the rear.

It is stuck somewhere and simply not releasing.

I am still not sure about which direction is reverse when looking at the engine lever mechanism. I don't have cables or a control attached to throw it into reverse and determine what way it goes.

Finally got it off! WOW. There is a rubber seal I suspect is for the exhaust port and it came out in pieces with half stuck up inside and the other half left on the lower unit.
