I have a 1980 80 HP Merc outboard with stripped splines in the drive end of the crankshaft, does anyone know of a fix other than replacing the crank? I am open to all ideas and suggestions.

Usually the splines strip on the driveshaft instead of the crankshaft. It sounds like one or the other will have to be replaced.
I have been told that this condition happens when the boat is "wake/wave-jumped" or similar condition where the prop breaks lose under power, causing the engine to rev up excessively, and then suddenly grabbing when the prop re-enters solid water. That sudden stress on the splines tears them up.

Thanks, I think I am going to replace the crank, since that's where the splines are stripped. It's a great running motor if you can just get the power to the lower unit!
