im thinking obout buying a 1986 17 montauk with a 1986 70 hp yamaha. my last montauk 17 had a 90 evinrude.. i am a little concerned about performance. i mostly fish with 2 or 3 people in the boat with gear and a loaded cooler. i thought the 90 was more than enough motor but i am not sure about the 70. does anybody have any words of wisdom about this..thanks.

No problem.

I owned one for 15 years.

There were only a few times I wish I had a 90hp.
When it is rough or choppy, you can't go fast anyway in a Montauk.
At least I couldn't take it even with a 70.

On our 79 MTK, we have a 70hp 87 2 stroke Merc--and 2 anglers can hit 34mph fully loaded with 19.9 gals of gas while fishing.

When tubing or H20 skiing with 4 adults, it is fine, unless skier slaloms then it is a bit slow. But w/ 3 adults, it is fine.

Like Joe said, if it's rough, you can't go fast anyhow in an MTK when it's rough.

I have a Suzuki 70 HP on my Montauk. I'm very pleased with, and I see no need for 90 but all I do is fish with his boat.

I had an 84 17 Montauk with a 70 HP Yamaha back in the early 90's.
Friend of mine had about the same year boat with a 90 Yamaha.
We were racing out to fish a lighthouse on the Delaware Bay, anchor location was critical. I was trimmed out turning close to 5800 RPM, He not only passed me, but pulled back to circle me and still beat me to the anchor spot.
It wasn't long after that ass whipping I ripped the 70 off and re-rigged with a 90.

1996 Montauk 17 with 1996 70HP Evinrude. Bought boat used about a year ago. No concerns about 70 Hp motor. I fish only St. Johns River (Florida) and Intercoastal Waterway (North Florida and South Georgia).

Only time I ever wished I had the 90 HP was when I stayed a little too long with a storm brewing.

Have to be careful with the new 90HP's (especially 4 stroke) as they weigh more than the old 2 strokes.
