I'm in the market for a kicker to go on my 85 Montauk. From former advice here I'm thinking around 8 hp long shaft. If I am out in the field and looking at a private sale, where do I take the measurement to see if the motor is long shaft or not. I know it should be about 20", but from where to where on the motor should I measure?
Thanks guys.

The distance between the interior apex of the mounting clamps of the motor and the A/V plate of the motor should be something more than 20" apart.
Most OMC long shaft kickers will measure about 22-1/2" between these two points.
If a kicker appears to have a 5" long extention bolted into the mid-shaft, it is most likely a Long Shaft motor.
