I hate to post this after I've looked at so many posts like this... I got a good deal on a really nice 2001 Nissan 40Hp 2 stroke (NS40D2- with three carbs). I can only find a 2007 owners manual for Nissan that lists the weight of my model for that year at approx. 87kg. That's about 192 pounds. This is the motor with electric tilt and trim. Long story short... how will this motor work weight-wise on my 1982 13' Sport? Me and my wife keep looking at it and commenting on how big it looks (insert your joke here). Again, sorry for the worn-out topic, but just seeking the current wisdom on this set-up. Thanks.

Size -- when it comes to marine outboards -- is irrelevent. I had to go back and clarify that statement... But, the hp and weight are bigger considerations. Regarding the hp, you're at the top end of BW's recommendation for a 13'. So, you're good there. With 192 lbs., that seems light to me for a 40hp. So, I wouldn't worry about that either.
I'd have a boat mechanic give it a once over, if possible, and if good, buy it for a price you're willing to pay, and get on the water!

Surf, I have a 1993 '13 with a 40hp Yamaha 2-stroke. I think the Yamaha weighs around 158 lbs. My battery and portable gas tanks are in the back of the boat. The boat sits a little low in my opinion. It is not uncommon for water to come over the transom I stop too quickly. If I were to repower, I wouldn't want to go with anything heavier than what I have. If you find that the boat sits too low, you may want to consider moving the battery and gas tanks forward. You may also want to consider a doel-fin to help you get on plane quicker. Good luck!

Thanks Joe! There are some heavy outboards some folks are running on their 13's according to this. Wonder if I could put a larger gas tank nearer to the bow to displace weight. I could lose a few lbs too! :) Lee

surfshark,
The list is just for Current Engine Choices.
This doesn't necessarily mean people have them are their boats.
Some of the lists do mention that "Some Engines may be too heavy".
Other lists we have don't even show some engines that are extremely too heavy in weight.
As always, the lighter the better so the owner needs to figure out what is best for them in the long run.

I agree with SSI. Based on my experience with a 50 hp Yamaha weighing in at about 160 lb. you can expect water to be entering over the back of the stern if you come off a plane too quickly. However, moving the gas tanks to the front will help. Better yet, have someone sit on the bow seat.

Just for information purposes. I have a 1983-13' and it came originally with a 1983-35 hp Johnson and the owners manual lists the Johnson's weight at 121 pounds without gas tank. It seems like a real nice combination of hp/weight for this size boat.
