Techron is good-it really does work. Put it in heavy, a whole good size bottle. to six gallons of fuel.

My local engine shop (Yamaha) recommends Yanaha's Ring Free additive. I have a 1988 Merc, which he said was not an issue. I used it as instructed, and it made a big difference. I bought the boat last year. Did the initial "shock treatment" to remove built up carbon, and engine ran really rough, but eventually smoothed out, and ran smoother, quieter, and idled much better. Now i just add the recommended amount per tank as instructed for maintenance.

My Merc mechanic later advised it's not necessary to use in every tankfull, just a couple times a season. He believes the additives take away the lubricating properties of the oil. All I know is, my engine ran like crap before I used it, so I will continue, but maybe go just under the "maintenance" dose.

Merc makes a similar additive, however my Merc dealer is 35 min away, the Yamaha dealer is 5. I also know the Yamaha dealer, and trust his opnion, he's the owner of his shop and been in the busniess 40yrs.

Sea Foam is another one you can consider.

Just run E10. That joker will be clean as a whistle after a tank. Now as for all the downsides...
