72 degrees yesterday here in Manistee,Mi so finally got the 68 Nauset in the water. 1999 100 HP Johnson started up on second turn of the key and ran perfect. When I got home I noticed a little oil/grease on one of the water discharge ports. I had just filled the lower gear case with new lube. Is this indicating a problem at all? How can any lube get into that system if all the seals are good? When I drained it last Fall the oil was clear, no foam or discoloration. Anybody have any ideas?

Which water discharge port, on the mid-section?

My motor will do that too from the different holes in the lower unit...especially after sitting for a long period of time.

If you're concerned about the lower units oil being contaminated with water, drain some of the oil and see if it's milky. If it is, then you know you have a problem.

Thanks Cliff. It is on the mid section and I just checked the oil it is clear as a bell. I guess I am a bit nervous about engines cause I know very little about them and they are so expensive to have worked on. Have been trying to find an owners manual or service manual for a while now and just can't seem to find one. The places people on here told me to check didn't have them. May have to put off retirement and take an outboard repair course.
Anyway, thanks for the response it is always good to hear that others have experienced the same things.

No problem...I was worried at first too....but come to find out, it happens a lot. I think it's more carbon mixed with the oil residue than just pure oil. Remember the two strokes burn oil with the gas so if there is a carbon discharge, i.e. after not using it for a long period of time, it'll seep out the first few times it's used again.

There are other experts on this forum who know much better than me,.....just my experience is all.

Is your fuel pre-mixed or do you have a vro pump?

I have a VRO but There is some oil in the tank because my mechanic suggested I put some in when I cranked it up for the first time last year. (I believe he told me to do that just in case the VRO wasn't working ). I have a 24 gL. tank and have filled it with fuel and sta-bil twice since last year so the oil is pretty diluted.
I will say that the engine actually runs better this year than last. Last year at slow,no wake speeds, it would stall out on me and this year at the lowest possible rpms it purred like a kitten for over an hour.

It'll be fine then. Just making sure your not mixing too much oil in the fuel. The vro mixes different at certain rpm's. As much at 80-1. Don't worry about the excess discharge in your exhaust.
