I have been thinking about putting a new engine on my whaler, one that does not suck gas like the one that i have. I currently have a 1997 200 Hp Mercury Offshore racing engine. That is why she sucks gas like she does, because she is a racing engine. So does anyone have any good ideas of a good motor to put on it? Mercury Verado? Evanrude E-tech?

I went with an etec on my 17' Outrage two years ago and have been very happy with it. Its a bit lighter than any of the 4-strokes I had to choose from at the time, fuel efficiency is greatly improved, and the thing is a powerhouse. The new etec is a 115 and replaces the original 1991 Merc 115.
The weight of the new motor was very important to me since I felt my boat already sat a bit low in the stern as it had since the day it was manufactured.

ETEC. The self winterizing is way cool and should save a ton in the long run. I haven't heard anyone regretting an ETEC yet.
