I need to replace the aging 30hp Evinrude on my 13' standard. I want a 4 stroke. Yamahas are in short supply right now, due to the uncertainty of what's going on in Japan. I've found one Yamaha 25 that fits what I'm looking for. I found one place that I can get a 25 Mercury for right about the same price. What are the pros and cons of each engine?

thanks

See this Current Engine Choice article.

The Yamaha F25 listed is for the Short Shaft model. If buying the Long Shaft model you would need to add a few pounds to the weight.

I had heard that tohatsu makes most or all of the smaller engines for mercury ( 30 hp and below ).

Well, I bought the Merc, I ordered it from a Bass Pro Shop near by, should be here in about a week to 10 days.

I have another question now, will the mounting holes be the same from my 1989 Evinrude 30hp to this 2011 Merc 25hp? Merc sent me the rigging manual via e-mail, but it doesn't have a template, it just says to put the motor on the boat, and drill through the bracket.

Thanks

they are both good engines, the real question is where is the closest dealer, does he/she do both or merc or yamaha? What is important to you , speed, weight, prop selection?

The top mounting holes should be the same.
The lower mounting holes will depend on whether or not they used the blind holes or not. See link below.

Put the engine on using the top holes and see if the lower holes line up. If not, you will need to drill new lower holes in the transom.

I think there's only one set of holes on the mounting bracket of my existing outboard, I'll take a picture when I get home and post it.

thanks again.

here's a picture of my stern:

The holes are about 9.5 inches apart, and about 3-5/8 inches from the top of the transom. Will the hole spacing on the 2011 Merc 25 be about the same?
