I have a 1981 Johnson 35 long shaft with remote/electric start that I'm working to get back to life. I pulled the lower unit off the other day to inspect and change the water pump and I inadvertantly pullled the drive shaft from the lower unit. Can I simply push the drive shaft back into the lower unit until the gears mesh and reinstall? I did this and everything seems to turn the prop just fine both ways. After years of building high performance cares and engines, this is my first foray into outboard repair. I purchased a water pump kit from my local outboard shop. Also, if the gear oil looks okay in the lower unit, is there anything seal or bearing-wise I should change while I'm at it. The top bearing looks okay. Thanks! Lee

As fas as I know you can just drop it back in place. At least you can on my `61 Evinrude 75hp V4. The water pump is what holds it in place. I removed mine (on purpose) to get the driveshaft sectioned (cut 5" off the shaft just above the waterpump), and had it welded back together, so as to make a short shaft motor.

Thanks for the information- it is consistent to what I was told by a mechanic late this afternoon at Seel's here in Charleston. I know it's kind of a dumb question., but I saw in my Seloc manual on one lower unit section where it read to not pull out the shaft or it would have to be calibrated in with the other gears. Looks like I can just push it back where it came from and go. Thanks again!
