I have a tired an worn out 1966 Sport with no motor and no interior. The bare hull weighs 425 lbs. I plan on installing a new interior but have been keeping an eye out for a motor. I came accross a 15HP that appears to be in good shape for its age. Probably early 80's. Don't know the exact age yet but I could get for a good price ($300). My concern is that with the extra water in the hull, the boat will not plane with more than 2 adults. What do you guys think?

In order to get the bow chock back far enough you need to pull the black part of the rub rail out of the white part and then cut out the normally unseen edges. Just a section behind where the chock will go, maybe a 1/2 inch more on either side. Then
Just pop it back in the white part of the rub rail and you will have plenty of room. I just did it ant it worked well.

15hp is pretty light for a 13' whaler. 25hp would be a better choice. I'm running a 30 with tiller steering.

A 15hp? Man....that will hardly get on a plane with one person let alone two. I'd reconsider your power choice if I were you.

I had an '88 Yamaha 15 on my pretty-dry '69 13 sport and could plane with two adults and two children--total passenger weight estimated at about 550 lbs. It wasn't a rocket, but it also came up on plane in a reasonable amount of time. I think much depends on the state of the motor.

The 13' classic is listed for a minimum of 9hp to plane with a light load. Our local yacht club had a well worn 13' and 2 stroke 15hp motor. It did about 20-22mph with one person onboard and would plane with 3 people aboard.

I suspect that with extra weight of the hull and 2 adults (depending on the adult weights), probably would still plane, a third person might be the one that set keeps it from planning.

Thanks for the input. I went to take a look at the motor which was an hour away. Ended up being a 20hp tiller with throttle controls with a lot of engine corrosion. Not what I was looking for. The search continues.
