I have a 1999 Merc 15hp 2-S I'm working on. The serial number is 0G888882. It has an 8-spline shaft. I have a 8-spline prop that came off of a 9.9-15 hp motor, serial # is 48-42522-9. It wont fit the shaft on my motor. I checked the splines and all look good. I looked up the prop for my engine and the part# for it is 48-828156A12. Does the second number superceed the first? The diameter of the shaft and the prop are so close that I could not imagine Mercury having 2 different shaft diameters. I could be wrong hence the question.

Mercury propeller # 48-828156A12 is a 9" x 9" Black Max aluminum three blade made for 2004 and earlier 9.9 and 15 HP four strokes as well as the 6, 8, 9.9 and 15 HP two strokes. It is supposed to fit your motor.
Have you cleaned the splines of both the prop shaft and the propeller hub thoroughly?

The prop I have is the
48-42522-9. I was told this is the same prop as the 48-828156A12. I cleaned and checked the splines. Does the first prop fit my engine?

Looking at the Mercury Historical Propeller Charts, I see this part number:
42552A_ 9 which is a 9" x 9" aluminum three blade for 6, 8, 9.9, 9.9 four stroke and 15 HP outboards, (presumably motor serial number) A197112 and up.
There is a note about the hubs for this prop which indicates there are two different hubs, one for "Design I Propeller Shaft (Full length splines on propeller shaft)" and another for "Design II Propeller Shaft (Half length splines on propeller shaft).

Thanks Tom. From what I have seen online, the 42552A-9 prop is from an older motor (1990-91). I am guessing Mercury increased the diameter of the shaft slightly for my year engine (1999). Either way, this prop is not going to fit. I found another prop on ebay for $20 it is part# 48-828156A12, which the Mercury parts guide states is the correct prop for my engine.

48-828156A12 is ONE propeller for your 15 HP. They come in several sizes depending on what you application is.

The engine would be used for an aluminum boat on a lake.

Well, again, it depends on what size and type of aluminum boat and what your uses will be. Or, more to the point, how fast the boat will go.
There are props for your motor in 5-1/2", 6-1/2", 7", 8", 9" and 10-1/2" of pitch.
