Hello,

I am hoping that someone may be able to tell me where in Oregon I might be able to purchase a top for my 1971 16' Whaler.

I have always thought it was a Montauk but have been told on this site that it is not. I have been told the boat is a 1971 16' Nauset. Does anyone out there know how to know what top you should get to for this model. I would like to be able to fish out of it but be out of the elements.

Any information would be great.

Thanks,

Frank

Frank,
Not sure what your referring too when you say tip for your whaler? I am going to guess you mean a bow chock, simular to the one in the parts photo http://www.whalercentral.com/photogal...hoto_id=16 ? If so you can purchase one on ebay from time to time or you can purchase one from Specialty Marine.

I would think that a sun top would work to keep you in the shade. It's not easy to fish around but you get the hang of it and it's lighter and not as top heavy on a 17 foot boat as a T-Top. OEM suntops were made by Mills Canvas and I think they are great tops and last a long time, sometimes 30 years, but they aren't cheap. Check site sponsors for options, or places like www.iboats.com

Thank you for the information. That was a type O, I meant Top as in boat top. I posted pictures last year of my boat and was told it is a Nauset. I decided to keep the boat so now I am looking to put a top on it to keep my wife out of the weather when we are fishing during the winter months. Thanks again for the information.

If your fishing during the winter, i would encourage you to spend the money and get the full Mills canvas. You will be dry and toasty warm under there, it's really the only way to go. For the Nauset Mills offers a drop curtain, which functions like the drop curtain on the revenge, the canvas forms a cabin but the stern of the boat is open for fishing. When you get chilled, you duck inside the canvas. The canvas on the 18 is different, in that it totally encloses the stern of the boat.

It is not a cheap option but neither is having it custom made locally.

I concur. You should get a Mills canvas set up for your Nauset. There is nothing better.

You can just order over the phone; they have all the patterns for your Whaler model.

At a minimum, get the Forward Shelter, Flying Top and Windshield.

Here are photos of a members Nauset with the Mills Flying Top Set with Forward Shelter in the original Tan color.

The Blue cover he has isn't part of the set but something he added later.

Joe,
I was thinking how hard it is to find shots of canvas for the different options. looking thru personal pages to get a good shot is not always an option so I was wondering if canvas should be treated like OEM parts, with photos in the parts section?

Am I correct that Mills now sells the same canvas set, a later design for the Montauk, instead of the tan duck canvas shown in Joe's link? It seems as if the Montauk system would fit the Nauset models and is a better design.

I would order it in the sunbrella "Toast" color, which is pretty close to the original color.

Larry -- Montauk/Cohasset/Nauset/Sakonnet/Eastport canvas systems from Mills are all the same thing, same part numbers.
